Statement of Purpose

The OPAL Shared Cataloging Task Force has the responsibility to explore the options available for shared original and copy cataloging. The task force should conduct a survey of the Directors’ Council to determine interest in shared cataloging. The task force should investigate and report on structure, costs, and other factors related to shared cataloging. The exploration should consider all potential options, including the use of existing cataloging staff of OPAL members for a fee. Discussions with members of the Cataloging Committee about shared cataloging workflows are highly encouraged, but up to the discretion of the task force.

The task force chair will be Julie McDaniel. The remainder of the task force will be comprised of three members of the Directors’ Council and one OhioNet staff member appointed by the OhioNet Director of Technology Services. One member from the Directors’ Council should have past cataloging experience. One member from the Directors’ Council should be from a library without a full-time professional cataloger on staff. One member from the Director’s Council should be from a library with a professional cataloger on staff. The chair of the task force will report on the task force’s progress at quarterly Executive Council meetings. The final report, including recommendations for next steps, is due at the June 2013 Directors’ Council meeting.
