Nominate a Member for the OPAL Service Award!

Each year at the Annual Conference, OPAL names one of its members as the recipient of the OPAL Service Award. Every OPAL member is eligible to nominate someone who they believe has helped OPAL above and beyond the call of duty in the past year or so. Nominations are being accepted until Friday, May 28th by emailing cvesei@bw.edu.

Letters of nomination should include the name of the person being nominated and the person(s) making the nomination; the name of the university of the nominee; as well as a description of the service provided to OPAL by the nominee. Details about the value or impact of the service to OPAL will be helpful as well.

The OPAL Executive Committee (EC) will review the nominations and make a selection. The person selected for the Service Award will be announced at the OPAL 2021 Annual Conference and will receive registration and travel expenses (if applicable) to attend a library-related conference of their choice within a year after winning the award.

OhioLINK Films on Demand (GEER) Collection in EBSCO

EBSCO has confirmed that the partner database content for the Films on Demand collections is missing and a service issue has been opened. Because of this problem, if you have selected the OhioLINK GEER collections within EBSCO Holdings Management you will not see Full-Text Finder links for those titles in your Discovery results.

Once the content issue has been resolved, the links should start working as expected for the selected content - EBSCO has not indicated a timeframe for fixing this yet. In the meantime, you can select the Films on Demand database within your EDS profile and configure the EDS-Films on Demand custom link as a work-around. This will involve adding your OhioLINK supplied CustomerID to the base URL and setting the Local Collections for Filter option to the subscribed OhioLink Collections. Please contact OPALHelp if you have questions or would like help with the configuration.

WorldCat Holdings Set for Collection Manager Packages

OPAL libraries' institutional settings have been set to automatically maintain e-book or e-media holdings in WorldCat for selected titles or packages in OCLC Collection Manager. This will keep the corresponding record information updated in WolrdCat Discovery and WorldCat.  ILL and local print holdings continue to be maintained locally by each institution.

Introduction to ConsortiaManager

While eResource management can be challenging, it doesn't have to be where your OhioNET subscriptions are concerned!

ConsortiaManager takes the guesswork out of renewals and provides a suite of native tools for analysis and tracking. Whether you are new to working with OhioNET on your eResource subscriptions or just need a refresh, join us for an overview and demonstration of ConsortiaManager.

OhioLINK LAC Approves Guidelines for Addressing Outdated or Offensive Subject Terms

The Database Improvement and Discoverability (DIAD) policy team's proposed guidelines for addressing outdated or offensive subject terms were approved at the recent March 12, 2021 Library Advisory Council (LAC) meeting. The guidelines outline what OhioLINK plans to do with the records it provides to members. Over the next few weeks, we will discuss options with the Cataloging COI and OPAL members to determine how OPAL would like to address local practice and coordinate any resulting workflow and systems changes.

What to Know About Suppressing Item Records

Just a reminder that OhioLINK asks all members to suppress locally subscribed electronic resources from the central catalog. If your record is the only record on a bib, you need to suppress both your item record AND the bib record. Use the bib fixed field SUPPRESS = z DISPL OPAL/SUPPR OLINK.  Otherwise the record will display in the central catalog and the record shows up as "OPAL Libraries  No Local Holdings."

OPAL also made the decision quite a while ago not to include online journal records in the catalog. These should be removed from the catalog. You can find details on the OPAL website in the Cataloging Manual.

New OhioNET Consortium Agreement for Content Providers

Over the past year, OhioNET has developed a new consortium agreement for content providers that clearly defines our expectations while also allowing for flexibility in how our organizations work together. This agreement was crafted with the needs of our members at the forefront, and those who purchase eResources through OhioNET will benefit from this new clarity.
