Addressing Outdated or Offensive Subject Terms
Official efforts to advance equity in subject headings and make changes to Library of Congress Subject Headings have been stalled since 2016. As a result, the OhioLINK Database Improvement and Discoverability (DIAD) Policy Team issued guidelines for addressing outdated or offensive subject terms in the OhioLINK Guidelines for Outdated Subject Terms. These guidelines are optional actions that individual institutions can undertake in their local catalogs if they wish to do so. The Report from the SAC Working Group on the LCSH “Illegal aliens” informed the OhioLINK recommendations and may serve as an additional resource.

The Orbis Cascade Alliance has adopted alternative subject headings in their Alliance catalog discovery systems. Search the member catalogs to explore their approach (both the original Library of Congress subject headings and the alternative headings are retained in the search and browse indexes).

As OPAL members consider local implications and strategies, we are exploring the system options available to address this issue, including retrospective updates and maintaining alternative subject headings, since local changes can be superseded by batch loading records, authority work, and other factors.

You are Invited to the OhioLINK Open CIRM Meeting
All OhioLINK member library staff (that includes OPAL) are invited to attend an open CIRM Policy team meeting on February 5 at 10 a.m. via WebEx. CIRM makes recommendations to the Library Advisory Council on renewals of existing resources and acquisition of new resources for OhioLINK. The agenda and login will be sent to registrants who RSVP. Please register by Tuesday, February 2 at 5 p.m.

Setting Up Sage Business Cases in EBSCO Holdings Management
OhioLINK has amended the instructions regarding the correct packages to select in EBSCO Holdings Management for the Sage Business Cases (GEER). You will need to select both:

  • • SAGE Business Cases
  • • SAGE Business Cases 2020 Annual Collection

A gap in coverage remains for 2019 Sage Business Cases. OhioLINK is working with EBSCO and Sage to establish the correct knowledgebase collection for 2019 and will make an announcement once more information is available.

Records Loaded for OhioLink Sage Business Cases

Records for the OhioLINK Sage Business Cases collection (GEER) have been loaded into the catalog for OPAL and will display in your library scope if you have opted in.

Just a reminder that the Teaching Notes activation code for all OhioLINK members is OhioLINKSBC. Faculty will need to request this code from the library in order to view the Teaching Notes.

Sage has a step-by-step instruction video for setting up a faculty member's account with the activation code for Teaching Notes. This information is covered in webinars as well. Dates and times for webinars are on the OhioLINK OStaff page. Please refer to GEER Resources for librarians page (with OStaff login) and GEER for Faculty page for full session descriptions. In addition, recordings will be posted on OStaff afterwards.

So far, the Sage Business Cases are the only MARC records that have been released for GEER Resources. We will load the others as OhioLINK makes them available.

Cataloging Manual Updates

The OPAL Cataloging Manual has been updated with a new section on Record Loading to reflect our changing and expanding resource cataloging and management landscape. Find out more about how record sets are added to and maintained in the OPAL Catalog, options for automatic record delivery of locally subscribed collections, and OhioLINK collection loading.

Listening to our BIPOC librarians: Creating Safe and Inclusive Academic Library Workspaces

As part of the OhioLINK Library Directors WebEx on February 4 (1:30-3 p.m.), Nancy Kirkpatrick, Executive Director/CEO of OhioNET, will share insights she has gathered from talking with BIPOC librarians around the state about what it’s like to work in Ohio’s academic libraries. Learn what we are doing well, and where we can make positive changes. Then Amy Pawlowski will outline OhioLINK’s Library Diversity Initiative and how institutions can participate in this important effort. Register for this event.

Configuring Third Iron BrowZine and LibKey

If you have purchased the LibKey/BrowZine package through OhioLINK or are considering Third Iron products, the latest OPAL Tips blog post provides an overview of the account set-up process and breaks down the various LibKey configuration options that Third Iron makes available.
